Update 8/1/08: Chance Press does exist!  Go to www.chancepress.com for details…

Chance Press doesn’t exist quite yet. I have self-published some chapbooks under the Chance Press name, but the goal extends beyond simply publishing my own work (although shit, someone has to do it, an it’s not as if anyone else has stepped up to the plate…). I am looking forward to starting up a small press whose goal is to publish poets who have had limited to no success getting published before- poets who work hard and write well, and who I think the world would enjoy seeing in print. Poets who may have convinced the odd magazine here or there to publish a poem among the schlock that turns up in small magazines, but who have never had an entire chapbook dedicated all to themselves. (The caveat here is that I hate 99% of the poetry I read, and also that I don’t have the self confidence to take myself seriously as the gatekeeper of what is “worthy” of being published. It’s the constant conflict between my narrow taste and the voice inside my head that asks what I’ve done that’s so fuckin great anyway… But all that aside, I want to find poets that I just downright enjoy reading, and I want to publish them.)

You’re welcome to submit your poetry as a comment on this page (just don’t be a dick and overload me), but I can’t imagine that anything will come of it for at least a year. First, Rubyred needs to come to Oakland. There can be no Chance Press without her. Second, we need to learn the craft. The desire is there, but between the two of us, we need to learn the skills to letterpress and design books. Although, in the interim, we may mess around with having covers pressed or silkscreened for us, just to get the ball rolling with some inaugural titles.

News about Chance Press will be slow to come, but it will be posted here when it is available.
